Rizwan Khan ist ein Moslem aus Mumbai, der am Asperger-Syndrom leidet. Seine Liebe gehört der Hindu Mandira - ganz zum Missfallen ihrer Eltern. Dennoch folgen die beiden ihrem Herzen und wandern in die USA aus, wo sie heiraten und ein neues Leben beginnen. Nach den Anschlägen auf das World Trade Center muss das junge Paar feststellen, dass die Stimmung im Land radikal umschlägt. Am Flughafen von L.A. kommt es zum Konflikt mit der Polizei: Was nur ein Symptom seiner Krankheit ist, wird als Akt der Bedrohung empfunden. Rizwan muss ins Gefängnis und kämpft dort darum, seinen Namen reinzuwaschen.
